The operation aimed to rescue 11 British soldiers serving with the Royal Irish Regiment. 1 Para’s successful joint operation with the SAS influenced the creation of the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG). On 3 April 2006 the SFSG was officially formed and 1 Para is described as a force multiplier.
