Brian Stonehouse was 24-years old when he parachuted into France on the night of 1 July 1942. This interview briefly examines his war service in France but leaves out many of the difficulties he faced and overcome as a clandestine and his experiences after being incarcerated in five concentration camps. Brian Stonehouse died in London on 2 December 1998 at the age of 80.

I was luck enough to know Brian quite well (I was at school with his nephew). After his time in concentration camps, he could not stand the smell of meat cooking as it was too upsetting. He was a fabulous portrait painter and did the one of the Queen Mother, that hangs in the bar of the SF club. He regularly used to have lunch with the Queen Mum and where they talked in French and listened to Elvis Presley records! He was quite a character and much missed for his wit and humanity

Brian STONEHOUSE a été emprisonné ici , à Castres , dans le sud de la France , dans une prison secrète ( dite ” baraque 21 ” du camp de Saint Sulpice – la – Pointe , pour brouiller les pistes ) , avant d ‘être livré aux allemands et finir interné dans 4 camps de concentration , avant d ‘être libéré en 1945 à Dachau .
Son agent de liaison , Blanche CHARLET , qui lui avait amené depuis Gibraltar un poste-radio , caché dans une mallette d’artiste – peintre a été , aussi , emprisonnée à Castres , sous sa fausse identité de Sabine LECOMTE . Elle s’est évadée de la ” Baraque 21 ” , lors de l ‘évasion collective du 11 Septembre 1943 , où 38 prisonniers réussirent à s ‘évader sans aide extérieure .
Brian STONEHOUSE a été un grand résistant , un homme très sympathique et un artiste – peintre et portraitiste de talent ; possédant un de ses dessins de mode , réalisé à New-York en 1956 , je confirme que sa finesse et son talent artistique sont de très haut niveau .
