Alan: The story is a bit old. Since then considerable doubt has emerged that the man is indeed who he claimed to be. At best he was a low-level operative who ran into trouble: by defecting he would get asylum and he hoped monetary compensation for the (largely bogus) intelligence he would impart to ASIO.

Thanks. It is interesting to study the psychology of the defector.
(1) There are the star defectors who meet all expectations.
(2) There are the semi-bogus defectors who defected for reasons that are not those they state, and make up stories so as to be taken seriously.
(3) There are the very helpful defectors who initially tell a lot that’s important but can’t face the fact that at some stage theywill have told all they know and thus lose their star quality. Psychologically they need the attention. So they start making up stories. Well-known examples: Anatoliy Golitsyn who eventually fed JJ Angleton’s tendency to engage into conspiracy theories, thus causing a lot of damage. or closer to us, but less damaging, Ion Mihai Pacepa.
