The Battle of Arnhem (17-24 September 1944) is one of several Battle Honours awarded to British Airborne Forces and although the operation was a tragic failure it represents the personal qualities looked for in men wishing to be accepted into the ‘airborne brotherhood’ of current day British paratroopers.

Much has been written about the heroism and determination of these airborne soldiers attempting to hold the Bridge at Arnhem against overwhelming German forces but unlike most historians Anthony Tucker-Jones increases our understanding by exploring this operation from the perspective of the Germans.

In his new book, The Devil’s Bridge: The German Victory at Arnhem 1944”, Anthony Tucker-Jones provides a more balanced view of Operation Market Garden and the savage battle to hold the Bridge at Arnhem until relieved by conventional ground forces which never arrived.
